Our Purpose

tamhsc aans, tamhsc neurosurgery

The Texas A&M American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Medical Student Chapter was established in 2015 to allow our medical students a developed platform to experience Neurosurgery. Through collaborations with the Texas Brain and Spine Institute (TBSI) and under the guidance of faculty advisor

Dr. L. Gerard Toussaint, we are able to provide shadowing opportunities with faculty neurosurgeons, a Student Neurosurgery Research Program (SNRP), formal chapter meetings with neurosurgeons as guest speakers, and informal mentoring by upperclassmen and our faculty.

Our Chapter

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is the organizing body for neurosurgeons in the United States and acts as a platform for collaboration with international neurosurgical organizations. The AANS Young Neurosurgeons Committee (YNC) was created in an effort to develop future leadership in neurosurgery by promoting involvement of young neurosurgeons in the AANS and to expose medical students to neurosurgery and neurosurgical research. The YNC also serves as a forum for networking and collaboration with leaders in the field of neurosurgery.

The Texas A&M College of Medicine was established in 1977 and is devoted to training physicians who excel in both patient care and medical research. They have developed numerous collaborations throughout the state of Texas in an effort to accomplish this mission and one such partnership is with the Texas Brain and Spine Institute (TBSI). TBSI is based in Bryan/College Station and, as such, enables medical students interested in neurosurgery to explore their options as early as their first year in medical school. In addition to the practicing neurosurgeons, TBSI researchers strive to improve the understanding of neuroscience and neurosurgery and commonly incorporate medical students in their studies.
